How to Swim with a Mermaid – 3 Ideas

Swimming with a mermaid is the absolute childhood dream for many – especially for young children. Mermaids simply spark the imagination like nothing else. Meeting and swimming with one is basically as magical of an experience as it can get.

Maybe you have heard about swimming with dolphins. But swimming with a mermaid is not as established yet. It is not easy to find much information online about whether this is even a thing and where and how you can actually do it. That’s why I did some research about which options there really are. Here is what I found.

In this post, I listed the 3 best options, for an unforgettable experience of a swim with a mermaid, that are currently available (mostly in the USA).

Option 1 – Take a mermaid swimming class

The best option to experience a swim with a mermaid might be to participate in a mermaid swimming class. Why, you ask? Because you don’t only get to swim with a professional mermaid trainer, but you can turn into a mermaid yourself and feel what it is like to glide through the water with a mermaid tail.

During such a class you will learn the basics of the so-called mermaiding. That is, how to put on a tail, how to be safe in the water and quickly get out of the tail if necessary and of course how to do the dolphin kick. The dolphin kick is the swimming technique that mermaids use to elegantly move through the water.

Mermaid swimming classes are a lot of fun for both children and adults. Mermaiding is also a real sport by the way. You might not notice it because it is so much fun but by doing the dolphin kick you are actually absolving a full-fledged core workout!

Especially for children, there are courses available in almost any bigger city. However, there is often a minimum age of 7 years required to participate.

If you do not have your own tail, you can often rent it at the swimming school. Some schools even offer private mermaid classes or birthday packages with a mermaid swimming class.

A bigger mermaid school with several locations in the USA and Canada is Aquamermaid. They offer classes for children as well as teens and adults. You can also find other mermaid classes in your area on Google etc. Most of the one-hour classes cost around 60 US-Dollars (including a rented tail).

Option 2 – Book a professional mermaid for a party

Another option for how to swim with a mermaid is to book a professional mermaid. There are in fact many professional mermaids who perform at parties for children (or adults). You can, for example, invite them to a swimming pool party location where the mermaid can swim with the children and interact with them.

This is an especially great option for younger children who are still too small to safely wear a mermaid tail themselves.

Of course, it is also possible to book a mermaid performer for a smaller group of maybe a handful of children or less. The rates of the mermaids are usually hourly and don’t depend on the number of guests.

If you want to give your child a very special experience you could even book a mermaid for a one-on-one swim session together.

Some mermaids for hire even offer games and/or educational options like ocean education as well.

You can find mermaid performers online on Google etc. if you search for mermaid performers for parties or mermaids for hire in your area. For example, Aquamermaid offers mermaids for hire in the USA and Canada and Mermaid Tempest and Friends offers mermaid performers in Australia. The price per hour usually starts at around 200 US-Dollar.

Just make sure you talk to the mermaid before the event to arrange your dream experience of a swim with a real mermaid.

Option 3 – Go to mermaid camp at Weeki Wachee

The Weeki Wachee State Springs Park in Florida is the most famous location worldwide to see mermaid shows. They started showing mermaid shows as early as in the 60s and have kept their beautiful performances going ever since. This means they definitely know how to stun you with all their expertise!

In fact, it takes months for a mermaid performer at Weeki Wachee to be able to perform one part of one of the shows and even up to one year until they have learned everything they need to know to enchant the viewers.

The mermaid shows take place daily at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The entry fee for the park is $13 for adults and $8 or less for children up to 12 years. Besides the mermaid shows, you also get to see the rest of the park going on boat tours, to the water park and more.

Watching the mermaids perform is undoubtedly a beautiful experience on its own.

But can you also swim with the mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs?

There is one option for swimming with the mermaids at Weeki Wachee in Florida: The park offers two-day weekend mermaid swimming camps for children 7-14 and for adults ages 30 and up.

During the camp, you can learn to swim and perform like the mermaids at Weeki Wachee and also receive a mermaid makeover and have your picture taken.

At the end of the camp, the children get to perform their own little show for their parents and friends. Another highlight is that they can participate in one of the real mermaid shows as a dry performer.

This is not only a fun way to swim with other mermaids but also to have a look behind the scenes at the most famous mermaid shows around the world. The mermaid camp costs 375 US-Dollars for children.
